Collisions, fallen tree and long queues hit Sussex roads as rain brings difficult morning commute

Two collisions and a fallen tree have been reported in Sussex, as drivers face queues across the county during a wet Tuesday morning commute.

The disruption comes ahead of further unsettled weather this week, with a yellow wind warning covering parts of Sussex on Friday.

In Lewes, the A275 is partially blocked in both directions near the junction with the A277 Spital Road following a crash involving a motorbike.

Queues extend to Brighton Road and Western Road on either side, with congestion also stretching back along Winterbourne Hollow from the crossroads. The incident was first reported at 7.30am.

In Heathfield, a crash involving two cars has partially blocked the A265 Mutton Hall Hill in both directions near the B2203 Tower Street.

Traffic is queueing for around half a mile on either side of the incident, which was first reported at 7.25am.

The collisions follow an earlier report of a fallen tree partially blocking the A267 in both directions near Chiddingly Road at Horam.

Drivers at Hurst Green also face a slow journey on the A21 London Road northbound between Silver Hill and the A265 Station Road. Travel time through the roadworks is around 15 minutes, with temporary traffic lights expected to remain until later on Wednesday.

There are eight-minute delays northbound at Boship Roundabout, although queues are easing.

On the A27, westbound drivers face ten-minute delays towards Beddingham Roundabout, also easing. Delays at Drusillas Roundabout are increasing, adding around three minutes, while there are four-minute hold-ups eastbound towards Pevensey Roundabout and westbound towards Golden Jubilee Roundabout.

Along the A259, westbound traffic on Marine Drive between Cairo Avenue and the B2123 High Street faces eight-minute delays. There are also two-minute delays on Eastbourne Road between Gaylis Farm and Chyngton Lane North.

Some of the longest hold-ups in West Sussex are around Chichester. Drivers on Street End Road northbound towards Whyke Roundabout face delays of 17 minutes, while the A27 westbound towards the same roundabout has ten-minute delays. Pagham Road westbound towards the B2145 has nine-minute delays.

On the A24, northbound delays towards the A283 The Pike are around twelve minutes but easing. Further north, delays towards Robin Hood Roundabout are increasing at around five minutes.

Traffic is also slow around Worthing and along the coastal route. There are seven-minute delays eastbound on the A27 Sompting bypass, six-minute delays eastbound on the A259 Goring Way and seven-minute delays eastbound on the Roundstone bypass.

The A259 westbound between Cornfield Close and Church Lane has eleven-minute delays, although these are easing.

Rain and drizzle are expected to continue across Sussex today, with heavier bursts during the morning becoming lighter and more patchy this afternoon. Temperatures will reach around 14°C.

Some clear spells may develop tonight before further rain arrives towards dawn. Wednesday will be cloudy and wet, with heavy rain at times and blustery winds, particularly during the afternoon. Temperatures will reach around 13°C.

Thursday is expected to start mainly dry with sunny spells, before rain and strong winds arrive during the evening.

A Met Office yellow wind warning is in force for Brighton and Hove and parts of East and West Sussex between midnight and noon on Friday, October 23.

Gusts of 50–60mph are possible, with some exposed and coastal locations potentially seeing 70mph or more. The location of the strongest winds remains uncertain.

The Met Office warns of possible transport disruption, power cuts and damage to buildings, alongside risks from flying debris and large waves affecting coastal areas. Heavy rain could make travel more difficult.

Winds are expected to ease during Friday’s late morning and early afternoon, although conditions will remain breezy.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, check travel updates and stay aware of changing forecasts.

The outlook for Saturday remains mixed. The BBC forecasts another spell of wet and windy weather with heavy rain arriving from the west, while the Met Office’s regional forecast suggests sunny spells and a few showers.

Traffic delays reflect the supplied morning reports and may change.
