Storm Boelo: Fire service urges public not to call 999 about fallen trees in Sussex

The fire service has urged the public not to call 999 about fallen trees amid severe weather.

Storm Boelo – the second named storm of the season – brought strong winds to Sussex this weekend, resulting in fallen trees across the county.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) said residents should only call the emergency services if a tree is ‘endangering life’.

It comes after West Sussex Highways said it had dealt with 32 ‘fallen tree emergencies’.

A WSFRS spokesperson said: “Joint Fire Control has received a number of 999 calls this afternoon about fallen trees. Please only dial 999 if a tree is endangering life.

"For issues that pose an immediate risk, such as a fallen tree blocking the carriageway, call West Sussex County Council’s response team on 01243 642105.”

Fallen trees continue to impact travel across Sussex, with several road closures still in place in Amberley, Rushlake Green and Ardingly, according to AA Traffic News.
