Worldwide Aussie kayaker crosses Channel from Rye

An Australian man who has kayaked around the world crossed the Channel from Rye Harbour on his journey to Paris on Monday (September 6).

Steve Posselt has been traversing the world’s waterways since January to get to the UN Conference on Climate Change in the French capital on November 30.

The 62-year-old grandfather is trying to raise awareness of what he called his country’s ‘indefensible’ impact on climate change through coal mining and exportation. “The Channel journey was a bit of a milestone,” he said.

“It’s all about raising awareness about how serious the issue is of climate change and how we need to do something about it.

“No matter what we do here, we really need to bring Australia’s output to light.

“I would like to apologise for all thinking Australians.”

Steve’s journey started in Canberra where he kayaked to Sydney, then flew to North America where he paddled the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans and travelled up the Mississippi River.

The civil engineer and Al Gore-trained climate presenter had a near-death experience on the river as it flooded and is believed to be the only person to have paddled the Lower Mississippi during a flood. Eventually, he arrived in New York and came to the UK by ship before kayaking across the country from Bristol to Margate and down to Rye.

This week, he crossed the Channel and then came back to enjoy a well-earned rest in Hastings before continuing his journey to Paris.

Steve said his five grandchildren are his most powerful motivator and this trip is his gift to them and their generation.
