Teens smoking rates highest in the South East

A report on the overall state of youth smoking highlights the alarming figure that stands in contrast to regions such as the North West and East Midlands, where the rate is as low as 1%.

While youth smoking rates have been declining across England according to recent ONS data, the South East, along with the South West and East of England, continues to report the highest smoking prevalence among young people. In contrast, areas like the North West and East Midlands show significantly lower figures, highlighting a need for targeted interventions in high-risk regions.

The report also indicates that 59% of regular young smokers in the South East obtain their cigarettes from friends or family, while 33% purchase them from shops such as newsagents, tobacconists, and sweet shops. This trend emphasises the role of social circles and the availability of tobacco products in maintaining smoking habits among youth. Convenience stores have also been flagged for a growing number of reports related to underage vape sales, underscoring gaps in the enforcement of age verification laws.

Surprisingly overall youth smoking is currently higher in more affluent areas opposed to the usual correlation of higher smoking rates in deprived areas. Other factors remain consistent with an increased risk of smoking among young people if family members and friends are current smokers.

Despite the troubling regional data, overall youth smoking rates in England are at a historic low, correlating with the ONS data that shows a rise in vaping as a smoking alternative. However, with the increased availability of both smoking and vaping products, stricter regulations and enforcement are necessary to prevent underage use.

The data highlights the need for stronger measures to prevent the sale of cigarettes and vapes to underage users, particularly in regions like the South East where smoking rates remain disproportionately high. By enforcing stricter penalties for illegal sales and educating young people about the dangers of smoking, we can work towards a smoke-free generation.
