As the school summer holidays seem last an eternity, you might find yourself seeking a wallet-friendly escape from the madness. We have the perfect spot: the Isle of Wight.
Just a short ferry ride across the Solent, taking just 22 minutes, the island offers family-friendly activities, unique events, golden sandy beaches and picturesque landscapes.
There’s something special for everyone – and it doesn’t have to break the bank.
Free travel to the Isle of Wight
That’s right – Kids Go Free to the Isle of Wight on foot during the school holidays with Wightlink.
Up to two kids (age 5-15) go FREE for every adult or senior foot passenger day return.
That’s not all, dogs and bikes go free too, so you don’t need to leave anyone behind!

Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary
A heartwarming, feel-good day out where the family can meet over 100 rescued donkeys and ponies. There are gentle walking routes around the paddocks, picnic areas to enjoy lunch with a view, and it’s dog-friendly too. Keep an eye out for feeding time – it’s always a hit with little ones.

The Needles and Alum Bay
The Island’s most iconic landmark is a must-see. The beach and cliffs offer breathtaking views and space to run wild. Watch the coloured sand cliffs shimmer or hunt for fossils along the shoreline. Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery.

Quarr Abbey
A peaceful mix of history, nature and animals. Walk through woodland trails, meet the resident pigs, and explore the grounds of a working Benedictine monastery. There’s even a small art gallery and tea shop. Bring binoculars – the area is full of birds and wildlife.

Bembridge Lifeboat Station
Walk along the pier to this incredible offshore boathouse. Kids can see the lifeboat up close, learn about rescues, and chat with volunteers. It’s educational, inspiring and a great way to understand the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

Red squirrel spotting
The Isle of Wight is one of the last UK strongholds for native red squirrels, and Parkhurst Forest is a brilliant place to find them. There are easy-access woodland paths and plenty of room for young explorers to roam. Go early in the morning or at dusk for your best chance of a sighting.

The Needles New Battery
Tucked above Alum Bay, this National Trust site is home to a Cold War rocket test facility. Fascinating for curious minds, and there’s lots of space to run around with amazing views over the Solent.

Stargazing
With minimal light pollution, the island is a designated Dark Sky area. Bring a blanket and lie back to spot constellations, satellites and the occasional shooting star. Download a stargazing app before you go – kids love identifying planets and constellations.

Isle of Wight Pearl
This coastal venue offers more than just jewellery – it’s a creative day out. Take part in free pearl masterclasses, watch expert demonstration sessions, and enjoy cliff-top sea views from the terrace.

Walks and family trails
From dinosaur hunts on the beach to clifftop adventures and shaded forest paths, there’s a walk for every age and energy level. Many routes have themed trails with signs to follow and things to spot. Download a trail map before you go or join one of the Island’s family-friendly guided trails.
