Arun bowlers do their bit for leukaemia research

A charity day for leukaemia research was held at Arun, where 48 members played a match followed by a giant raffle with more than 100 prizes donated by the members.

This very successful event resulted in about £1,200 being raised.

The family of a late valued lady member, Daphne Anderson, who had raised so much for leukaemia research were present to give thanks for everything. Her widower Angus played in the match.

Arun ladies also entertained a much-depleted team from White Knights of Reading. This resulted in a resounding win for Arun, with Arun members making up for the visiting side.

Worthing Pavilion 133 Arun 94

Arun took a step backwards by losing their county league game at Worthing Pavilion. They needed to score well to have a better chance of winning the league, sitting nine points from the top spot and Egerton Park with a game in hand.

Arun must now concentrate on winning their next game – at home to Adur this weekend.

Adur got five points for the win and five points for wins on five rinks. Arun won on one rink for one point.

Adur are hot on Arun’s heels, only ten points below them and with two games in hand. Adur had top spot last year but it could be any of the top three this year, with Arun still strong contenders with two home games to come.

Arun won on four rinks but they lost the overall game by six shots to a good Sutton team.

Arun entertained Whiteknights for what is always a friendly and competitive game. Whiteknights snatched the game in the last few ends to win by 11 shots.

CRABLANDS

The Cormorants team visited Midhurst Eagles and came away winning the overall by ten shots – 43-33. They took all six league points.

Captain of the day for the Cormorants was Martin Hunt.

Scores: Terry Axworthy, Martin Hunt, Mollie Back and Joyce Heritage won 22-17; Denise Merritt, Marion Hatch, Rod Shambrook and Reg Hatch won 21-16; (friendly): Gwen Coombes, Bill Merritt, Elaine Sadler and Trevor Wilson won 24-16.

Crablands Bitterns hosted Lavant Blue and Bitterns won the overall match by 41 shots and came away with all six league points - the final result being 61-20. Captain for the Bitterns was Roy Tolhurst.

Scores: Jean Tolhurst, Geoff Brown, Iris Brown and Roy Tolhurst won 34-13; Meg Pocock, Eddie Willcocks, Brian Berry and Peter Blackman won 27-7; (friendly) Doe Berry, Les Howland, Jan Obermayer and Trevor Wilson lost 21-13.

SOUTHBOURNE

Arundel Mullets 27 Southbourne Rangers 45

Southbourne Rangers had an excellent away win against Arundel Mullets in county division two of the West Sussex Winter League.

Rangers won on both mats and overall by 18 shots to earn six points.

Southbourne currently top the division and this win edges them closer to promotion to the top division.

Scores: Audrey Bull, Dave Walter, Robin Armstrong & Antony Bull (s) won 22-13; Karen Alner, Mark Soper, Andy Smith & Rodney Bull (s) won 23-14.

Lavant Green 33 Southbourne Rovers 46

Southbourne Rovers had a splendid away win in south-west division two of the West Sussex Winter League against Lavant Green.

Rovers won on both mats and overall by 13 shots to earn six points. Southbourne are third in the division.

FITTLEWORTH

Walberton 62 Fittleworth 52

After close games on all three mats, the host club emerged the winners by ten points when Fittleworth visited Walberton.

Scores: Pauline Gilpin, Tessa Clegg, Tony Broughton, Monica Enticknap lost 26-18; Audrey Hodgson, Marilyn Knight, Gina Barnfield, Bernard Adsett won 16-15; Joan Goodchild, Simon Herbert, Alvar Etherington, David Luxford lost 21-18.

The winner of the first leg of Fittleworth’s Singles Cup competition, who will go forward to the finals, was Charlie Martin.
