In 1993, Pat Butler, who at the time was chairman of Bosham Village Hall, arranged for a demonstration of carpet bowls, a sport suitable to play in the old hall.

Around 20 people attended.

The hall was booked for Tuesday and Sunday evenings but Tuesdays didn’t seem too popular, so the club played only on Sundays.

The parish council and village management purchased a set of woods and they borrowed a carpet mat.

When the mat had to be returned, all members contributed £25 to buy their own mat. These funds were paid back over time.

They played at Funtington Hall while the new village hall was built. Members started playing twice a week – on Wednesdays as well as Sundays – when the new hall was open.

Sundays then began to be poorly-attended so they switched to Wednesdays only.

The club are now very well-established and they own three carpets and three sets of woods, enabling them to accommodate up to 24 players at any one time in the well-run village hall.

There are still founder members involved in the weekly ‘roll-ups’ as well as matches against other clubs.

They still play every Wednesday and welcome new members.
