The Seagulls were given a spot-kick by Stuart Attwell in stoppage time at the Amex after a VAR review showed that Andy Robertson had clipped Danny Welbeck as he swung his boot to make an attempted clearance.

Pascal Gross subsequently stepped up to convert from 12 yards and salvage a point for Graham Potter’s side.

The game had already seen its fair share of drama, with the visitors having two goals chalked off by VAR and Neal Maupay missing another penalty for Brighton in the first half.

But while there has been much debate in the aftermath of the game as to whether or not Robertson’s actions warranted a foul, Gallagher has suggested that the video referee had a duty to alert Attwell to the incident so that he could make his own judgement call.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Football Show, the former official said: “I think this raises all kinds of issues.

"What I would say, from what Stuart Attwell sees, quite clearly not a penalty. You think Robertson kicks the ball.

"When you see this, this is what the VAR saw, it’s quite clearly a penalty because Robertson kicks out and catches Welbeck. If he’d caught the ball the way he went to kick it, the ball would have gone way, way upfield.

"I think the dilemma is, one man can see it’s not a penalty, one man can see it is a penalty, so what he’s done is invited the referee to see what he’s seen, and make his own judgement.

"That’s the good thing about VAR now, the referee did make the onfield decision, albeit through the refereeing review area.

"People say, ‘Is it a clear and obvious error?’. Well it is a clear and obvious error when you see it from behind the goal.

"That’s the view the VAR had, and I think what you have to bear in mind is that it’s impossible to say, ‘That’s not a penalty’ to the referee when you’ve got that view.”
