Carabao Cup fourth round: Brighton opponent is confirmed after thumping victory
Carabao Cup fourth round: Brighton and Hove Albion will travel to Manchester City
Manchester City comfortably avoided a Carabao Cup upset as they cruised into the fourth round thanks to a 5-0 win against Championship club Norwich City.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the Canaries and the unlikely soon became impossible as Enzo Maresca’s men took the lead on 29 minutes thanks to a header from 17-year-old Floyd Samba.
It did not take long for a second to arrive as lively Frenchman Rayan Cherki fired beyond visiting goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw. Allan soon made it three just moments after the break and Samba got his second and City’s fourth just before the hour. Ryan McAidoo added a late fifth and it was a stroll for City.
It means Manchester City will now face Brighton in the next round after the Seagulls advanced thanks to their impressive comeback 3-2 win at Manchester United yesterday.
Fourth round draw
- Fleetwood Town v Arsenal
- Manchester City v Brighton
- Everton v Newcastle
- Sunderland v Brentford
- Liverpool v Chelsea
- Bradford v Peterborough
- Fulham v Crystal Palace
- Bournemouth v Aston Villa
All fourth round ties will be played in the week commencing October 26.
Brighton to stay humble
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler called for humility and continued focus on the basics after their remarkable turnaround at Manchester United.
The Seagulls became the first team since 1976 to overturn a two-goal deficit and win at Old Trafford as substitute Maxim De Cuyper completed a thrilling, and thoroughly deserved, 3-2 comeback win.
Brighton boss Hurzeler says belief was key to Wednesday’s turnaround.
“I think that we have to stay very, very humble now and get an understanding why we are in the place where we are,” the Albion manager said.
“It’s about doing the basic things right and doing the small margins right, and therefore it’s so important that we keep this in our mind.
“That we stay humble, that we don’t take these things for granted, that we step into the game and understand ‘OK, it’s hard work again’.
“It’s hard, hard work, it’s doing the basic things right, and then we can grow into the game.
“And then we also know – and then we come back to the belief (aspect) – that we are a good football team.”
