Fabian Hurzeler confirms rare start for Brighton star at Manchester United

Manchester United vs Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round at Old Trafford - Wednesday, 8pm

Jason Steele will be given a chance to impress when Brighton travel to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler has indicated he will make changes for the encounter, with 36-year-old Steele stepping in to give regular number one Bart Verbruggen a rest.

Hurzeler rates the experienced Steel as “the best number two in the league” and is confident he will not let his team-mates down in the Carabao Cup third-round clash.

The 33-year-old German told a press conference: “I definitely want to give him more games this season and therefore (Wednesday) he will have the opportunity to be on the pitch and be the leader he can be.

“He has the full belief from my side and hopefully he will perform well.”

Femi Azeez fitness test

Femi Azeez will undergo a late fitness test as he looks to make his debut after his deadline-day arrival from Millwall, while Georginio Rutter is also expected to be available.

United will head into the clash still raging over the VAR mistake that allowed Erling Haaland’s derby winner on Sunday, but Hurzeler maintained that he is still a fan of the system.

“VAR makes football more fair and that is proven,” he said. “But there are moments, like the weekend, when it is not ideal, and things like this shouldn’t happen. What is important is it doesn’t happen again.”

Howard Webb: Tunnel vision

Referees’ chief Howard Webb believes “tunnel vision” from VAR Matt Donohue led to Manchester City’s derby winner being allowed to stand – but said the assistant VAR should have pulled him out of that tunnel.

Webb, the chief refereeing officer at Pro Ref, said on the ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ programme which aired on Tuesday: “I was really disappointed with this outcome. We all are. None more so than the officials themselves.

“They take a lot of personal pride in what they do and they’re obviously hurting now, having fallen short in this situation. They’ll not be officiating again until after the international break.

“We’ve reached out to Manchester United and acknowledged the error, as we do when these things happen.

“They don’t happen that often, but we want to ensure that we are transparent and open, and we’ve played the audio and the footage to the football club to let them know what happened, and we’re going to review this situation to understand what elements of process fell down in this situation which meant we didn’t get to the right outcome.”
