Newcastle to raid Brighton for top target amid £20m Coventry bid

All the latest transfer news and gossip for Brighton and Hove Albion and across the Premier League

Brighton have big decisions to make on their goalkeeping situation this summer.

Dutch international Bart Verbruggen was the main man between the sticks last term but the 23-year-old continues to be linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

The experienced and reliable Jason Steele, 35, provided the back-up and also kept goal during the cup competitions.

Meanwhile Carl Rushworth earned rave reviews while on loan at Coventry and helped Frank Lampard’s men to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League.

Coventry are determined to sign Rushworth on a permanent basis and had an initial offer of £20m rejected by Brighton.

It has now been reported that Newcastle are also in the running for Rushworth as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his goalkeeping options.

The Magpies currently have Nick Pope as their No 1 and are also linked with Manchester City’s James Trafford.

Rushworth, 25, joined Brighton in 2019 and has had loan stints at Worthing, Walsall, Lincoln, Swansea, Hull and Coventry.

He is yet to make a senior first team appearance for Brighton and is contracted until 2027.

Palhinha to Villa

Elsewhere, Aston Villa are in talks with Bayern Munich over a possible loan deal for Joao Palhinha, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Portugal midfielder joined the Bundesliga club from Fulham in 2024 and spent last season on loan with Tottenham, where he made 33 Premier League appearances and scored five goals.

Chelsea have rejected two offers from Como for Trevoh Chalobah, with two other clubs said to be interested in the defender, reports Football London.
