Brighton lead Wolves 2-1 at halftime in the Carabao Cup third round at the Amex Stadium

Brighton and Hove Albion’s brilliant midfielder Carlos Baleba opened the scoring against Wolves in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The 20-year-old Cameroon international has been excellent for Brighton this season in the Premier League and blasted the Seagulls ahead in the 14th minute against Gary O’Neil’s much-changed Wolves team.

Baleba wrestled back possession inside the Wolves half and then cut inside on his left foot and unleashed a powerful low effort that flew behind the out-stretched arm of visiting keeper Jose Sa. It was his first goal in a Brighton shirt following his £20m switch from Lille last year.

Baleba then produced an acrobatic celebration before giving a little dance in front of the Brighton fans. Simon Adingra then added a second for Brighton with another effort from the edge of the box but Wolves forced their way back into the game just before the break with Gonçalo Guedes’ deflected effort.

Baleba was one of just three players who retained their starting spot following a 0-0 Premier League draw against Ipswich last Saturday. Hurzeler made eight changes in total with Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh and Baleba all starting.

Brighton XI: Steele; Igor Julio, Webster, Enciso, Adingra, Moder, Minteh, Baleba, Ferguson, Estupinan, Hinshelwood. Subs: Verbruggen, Lamptey, Dunk, Welbeck, Mitoma, Kadioglu, Ayari, Wieffer, Veltman.

O’Neil also made plenty of changes with only Joao Gomes keeping his spot after a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle.

Wolves XI: Sa; Lima, Bueno, Pond, Doherty, J. Gomes, Doyle, R. Gomes, Sarabia, Hwang, Guedes. Subs: King, Lemina, Andre, Strand Larsen, Cunha, Dawson, Semedo, Forbs, Cundle.
