A goal from Omar Bogle separated the sides in a game which saw James Tilley stretchered off and John Yems shown a red card after the final whistle.
But how did the Reds players perform? Here are Cameron Winstanley's player ratings.
13. Isaac Hutchinson 6
Subbed on early in second half after injury to Tilley. Largely quietly when first brought on but again grew into it late on. Shot from distance in injury time not threatening keeper.
14. Archie Davies 6
Subbed on last 20. Never got into game and lack of quality when picking up ball. Cleared late Hartlepool cross away well to keep the game alive.
15. Reece Grego-Cox 5
Brought on in last 10. Made runs and put himself abut but never had a meaningful touch.
