Horsham YMCA 3 Alfold 0

SCFL premier

Horsham YMCA bounced back from the disappointment of the previous weekend with a strong win against Alfold, with the three points moving YM well clear of relegation threatened AFC Varndeanians and East Preston.

YM opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Jonathan Kusaka crossed for Mark Pritchard-Cave to volley into the far right of the net from the edge of the box.

Tom Tolfrey blazed over before YM veteran Dave Brown was stretchered off, subsequently hobbling on crutches to tell the County Times: “I’ve done my right knee before, and this time it didn’t sound too good – I heard it pop twice.”

After another YM corner, Aaron Jeal had to rush out to thwart a rare Alfold attack with his feet. Pritchard-Cave latched on to the rebound of a Tolfrey blast, but the empty net was avoided.

YM soon doubled their lead – Tolfrey converting a penalty awarded for a trip.

Just before the hour mark, Tolfrey crashed home YM’s third. Dean Lovegrove’s opportunist strike whistled past the post and Sam Henderson was just adrift,

All too infrequently, Jeal was called into action, but confirmed his status as one of the league’s top keepers.

This was a commanding Horsham YMCA win, happy manager Dean Carden saying: “Its always good to get a clean sheet win, and we played so much better than last week, really coming together as a team. Aaron (Jeal) had another great game and it could have been 5-0.”

On Saturday, YM head for Eastbourne United.

Roffey 2 Selsey 1

SCFL division one

Roffey boss Andy Lampard was ready for a tough test from a side that had beaten his table toppers in the away fixture and this is how it turned out. Harry Law and Jack Ryder came back in and Chris Neatherway rejoined the squad after illness.

The visitors started well without causing Ed Harvey real problems. Then Roffey began to push them back.

Ryder headed narrowly wide, Law’s header was over and Josh Neathey drove over.

Roffey took the lead when Tiago Andrade set up Josh Maher to skip inside and smash a left footer past Syd Davies.

In the final minutes of the half, Jack North played in Owen Worsdell to bring the visitors level at the break.

The second half saw Callum Jardim and Dan Pearse forced off through injury and replaced by Brendan Millborrow and Jamie Robinson.

Selsey dug in and looked to catch Roffey on the break and a North drive went inches wide.

At the other end Neathey volleyed into the side netting, Davies saved Andrade’s header and Law had another header narrowly miss the target. Neatherway replaced Ryder.

As the game entered the last ten minutes, Robinson was released down the left and delivered an inviting cross for Neathey to volley home.

This bit of quality settled a tight affair and, although not one of the Boars’ best performances, they had overcome tough opponents and stayed three points clear with a game in hand over Midhurst. This week Roffey welcome Dorking Reserves.
