Little Common’s Guernsey trip ends in defeat despite battling display
Little Common produced a hard-working and determined display but returned from their trip to Guernsey empty-handed following a narrow 2-1 defeat on Saturday.
Despite an early morning start and the long journey to the Channel Islands, the Commoners flew out of the blocks and made the perfect start, taking the lead after two minutes. Kenny Pogue released Sam Ellis through on goal and the Common forward made no mistake, slotting past the home keeper.
However, Common's advantage was shortlived as the hosts responded almost immediately, drawing level in the fourth minute with a neatly executed lob over Matt Cruttwell.
Guernsey thought they had completed a quick turnaround when they found the net again, but it was ruled out for offside.

Common continued to pose a threat going forward, with Tyreece Drummond driving into the area before seeing his dangerous delivery towards Ellis intercepted by a home defender.
At the other end, Cruttwell made two smart saves as the hosts looked to take control. Common went close to regaining the lead when Pogue connected with a volley, only to see his effort drift narrowly wide.
Cruttwell was again the hero on the stroke of half-time, producing an excellent point-blank save with his chest.
The hosts eventually edged ahead six minutes into the second half. An unsighted Cruttwell reacted superbly to keep out the initial effort, but the rebound fell kindly to a Guernsey player who tucked the ball home to make it 2-1.
The Common keeper continued his impressive afternoon with two further low saves to keep his side in it.
Common pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages. Lewis Unwin fired over the bar from a free-kick before a late corner provided one final opportunity, but the home defence cleared.
Despite another battling performance, the Commoners were left frustrated as they suffered a narrow defeat in a contest where they had remained competitive.
Manager Russell Eldridge said: "It was a frustrating afternoon because I felt we put in a really honest performance. It's never an easy trip coming over here, especially with the early start, but the lads approached it with the right attitude and couldn't have asked for a better start.
"Unfortunately, we switched off straight after scoring and allowed them back into the game almost immediately. That was disappointing because when you get yourself ahead so early, you want to build on it and make the opposition work to get back into the match.
"I thought Matt was excellent in goal and made some really important saves to keep us in the game. We showed plenty of commitment and worked extremely hard, but ultimately we've come away with nothing, which is frustrating.
"We've been competitive in the majority of our games recently, but we need to start turning these performances into points. At this level, fine margins make a big difference and we have to make sure we're on the right side of them more often."
Common now travel to face Wick. Eldridge added: "Saturday's game at Wick is a massive one for us. We know how important these games are, particularly against sides around us in the table, and we need to make sure we're ready.
"We've got to take the positives from the Guernsey performance, cut out the mistakes and go there with the belief that we can get a result. The players are working hard and showing a great attitude, but ultimately we need to start picking up points.”
