Presence, guidance, humour and passion – Sussex football in mourning for Malcolm

Shoreham FC and the whole Sussex football community have been paying tributes following the death of co-chairman and co-owner Malcolm Saunders.

Clubs across the county have been sharing memories of a man who played an important role in Shoreham's recent history and held numerous other football roles too.

A number of matches held since his death was announced have been preceded by minute's silences or applause for Malcolm.

Lancing and Billingshurst were among Malcolm's former clubs, all of which have paid their own tributes, as have the Southern Combination League.

Shoreham said: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our co-chairman and co-owner, Malcolm Saunders.

“Malcolm had been an integral part of our football club for the past four years and during that time his influence, commitment and passion for the club were felt by everyone.

"He played a hugely influential role in helping shape the club and was much more than simply a co-owner and co-chairman. Malcolm was a friend, a supporter and someone who genuinely cared deeply about the people and the future of the football club.

"Away from our club, Malcolm was a hugely respected and well-known figure throughout the county footballing scene, having been involved in football for many, many years. His contribution to the local game and the relationships he built along the way will be remembered by so many.

“Malcolm will be sorely missed by everyone at the club. His presence, guidance, humour and passion will leave a lasting void, and his contribution over the past four years will never be forgotten.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Malcolm’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved him at this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for everything, Malcolm.”

Mark Curram, joint manager at Worthing United, said on X: “The county football scene will miss him big time, what a character, I had the pleasure growing up and playing at Southwick, Steyning and Shoreham with him being one of the funniest men around.”

Tragically it is the second time in five years the Musselmen have lost a co-chairman. In 2021 the club were mourning the death of then co-chairman Ralph Prodger.
