Westfield woe at Eastbourne - but Bexhill get a Legg up

There was defeat for Westfield at Eastbourne Rangers - but a good win for in-form Bexhill United's under-18s - as teams got a last game in before the new sport shutdown.

Westfield slipped to their fourth defeat in succession after conceding two set pieces away at Eastbourne Rangers, on a3G pitch.

In a changed line-up playing 3-5-2, the Westies controlled possession, but a lapse in each half from a corner were the deciding factor.

Roberto Martellini got the Westies’ goal back on the half hour mark when some lovely build-up play was finished from the edge of the box.

Again Westfield created many chances but failed to make Eastbourne pay.

Unfortunately this game will be remembered for the last minute.

Westfield thought they had scored a last ditch equaliser only for the flag to go up as the ball hit the net. Apart from the fact an Eastbourne player headed it backwards for Dan Tewkesbury to bundle home, there were also two defenders on the line.

That’s two weeks running Westfield have felt aggrieved.

Another game on 3G and another loss. With the weather turning and more clubs using it, this is a burden Westfield need to break.

A Westfield spokesman said: “We can’t keep missing chances like we do. I counted at least sox good chances today that were wasted. On the other hand defensively we have to stay switched on, two free headers from corners is not good enough.

“That being said, the farce of the disallowed goal really spoils any enjoyment.

“We have a massive feeling of ‘what’s the point?’. It really does feel like that after the last couple of weeks.”

Bexhill Utd Under-18s made it six of the best as they ended Montpelier Villa’s own 100 per cent record in a top of the table clash.

The young Pirates sank Villa 2-1 after fighting back from a goal down against hosts who had started the day on top with six wins out of six.

United produced a solid all-round performance on the artificial surface at Sussex FA’s HQ at Culver Road.

The visitors went a goal down but did not let the setback knock them and levelled before half-time after Aaron Cook won and then converted a penalty.

Leading scorer Freddie Legg volleyed home the second-half winner following a good move down the right to stretch United’s winning run to six matches and put them top.
