‘You need to go one further’ – Crawley Town defender looking beyond League Two survival

Josh Flint believes Crawley Town need to look beyond just avoiding relegation this season after the defender rejoined the club this week.

Flint, 26, signed a new deal at the club on Wednesday (October 28) after his contract expired in the summer.

The 26-year-old made 57 appearances over two seasons with the Reds, but an injury in February earlier this year meant he played no part in the dramatic final-day survival last season.

Crawley find themselves in an even worse predicament at the start of this campaign, sitting rock bottom of League Two and six points adrift of safety already.

With interim boss Kevin Blackwell now in charge following Colin Kazim-Richards’ sacking last week (October 21), the Reds ambitions are firmly focused on staying up again.

But Flint told BBC Radio Sussex: “I think you need to go one further than that. You don't need to look at just keeping the club up. I think you need to look a bit higher than that.

“I think the aspirations have got to be probably higher than that, and just [to] try and win as many games as possible and then see where that takes us.”

And on whether the side has enough quality to stay up, he added: “Definitely – it'd be silly. We've definitely got enough players. It's just about the clicking.

“Similar thing to last season – I think that we had the quality there. [It] just didn't quite click last season, but I've no doubt it will this season.”

The Reds, winless in the league since August, travel to Boundary Park on Saturday (October 31) to take on 20th-placed Oldham Athletic.

Flint is available for selection having trained with the club for the last month before putting pen to paper on a new deal.

He said: “I've probably been back on the pitch for about four or five weeks now, and being out for so long and everything it's obviously a slow process because you don't want to injure something else.

“But hopefully I can be a part of the game on Saturday in some capacity and go from there.”
