Hockey colts show future is bright with talented young players

Horsham's colts section are continuing to provide a supply of talented young players which is leading to many successes this season.

Looking forward to April, Horsham now have four senior sides due to appear on finals days, the ladies’ first team having gone through following the withdrawal of Brighton and Hove who cannot field a team.

The men’s under-21 side had a slightly harder time of things, needing two wins and a draw to qualify on a blustery Sunday morning in Eastbourne.

However, Horsham are the defending champions and were able to field a strong team, thanks in part to returning first team alumni Zak Chinn, Peter Neave, and John Kimberley, joined by James Cooper, who were all available due to university holidays.

Regular first team players included the South Premier Division 2 leading scorer Jack Dean, Dan Humpheys, Ollie Yeomans and Noah Chinn.

The squad was completed by second team rising stars Joel Chinn, Sean Watson, Austin Harwood-Stamper, Lewis Harvey and Hugo Vickers, with Oli Harvey minding the net.

Coach Nigel Dean hopes to have the full squad available for the final against Lewes on April 23.

He said: “One of the great things about having such strong colts and men’s sections is that our top young home-bred payers get the chance to experience senior hockey at an increasingly sophisticated level.

“Of course one of the problems is that they then go off to university – but when you get them all back together they show just why Horsham are becoming such a powerful force in hockey in the south.”

This coming weekend the men’s first team travel to Purley Walcountians hoping to secure the single point required to guarantee promotion to South Premier Division 1, thus moving into the third tier of UK hockey one level below the National Leagues.
