Ifield fail to take advantage of Guru's six wickets

Ifield went down by 36 runs in a game that could have gone either way but was ultimately decided by Ifield's batsmen's failure to match the performance of their bowlers and in particular spinner Guru Kedarnath who bagged six Worthing wickets.

Worthing won the toss and enjoyed making hay in the sunshine and openers Matt Green and Josh Wood put on an excellent 111 before Wood was sold short by his partner and run out by Tom Wragg for 48.

Green (62) followed 10 runs later when Joe Smith caught him at short leg off the bowling of Kedarnath and wickets then fell regularly as no other batsmen was able to make double figures and Kedarnath and Jigar Parekh ripped through the middle and lower order.

The Worthing innings ended on 153 all out after 42 overs with Kedarnath returning figures of 6 for 36 off 16 overs with 8 maidens and Parekh picking up 3 for 41.

Ifield’s reply started badly with openers Wragg and Matt Atkins both out cheaply but Kedarnath and Vish Patel steadied the ship a little before Patel was stumped for 17.

Skipper Jack Groves and Joe Smith both failed to make meaningful contributions and Ifield were in trouble at 49 for 5. Kedarnath and new batsman Zakir Siddiqui provided some resistance and took the score to 95 before Kedarnath was caught for a patient 30 off 61 balls.

Siddiqui (22) followed without further addition to the score and unfortunately there were no heroics from the lower order and the innings finished on a disappointing 121 all out.

As with a number of previous games it probably only needed one Ifield batsman to go on and make a decent contribution in order for the game to be won but the general batting malaise goes on and Ifield must arrest this sooner rather than later if they are to climb the table.

Ifield entertain Pagham at Ifield Green next Saturday.
