Opening night nerves meant the first quarter lacked discipline and focus and Hornets finished three goals ahead.

The second quarter saw a greater composure and confidence with Bernie Twigg acting as lynchpin at centre and distributing well and finding space in the goal third.

Catherine Hutchin and Lucy Morris found their mojo and were soon scoring consistently and working very effectively as a pair. Angela Ruscoe was able to hold her space and support the shooters while making herself available in the centre third.

At half-time Flames were comfortably ahead.

The third quarter was hard work and Sue Cooper and Liz Adlington did well to reduce the options for the Hornets shooters.

Great court coverage from Hutchin and Twigg meant Flames retained control and simply had to hold on to their lead in the final quarter.

Hornets came back strongly but Adlington and Cooper tenaciously disrupted the flow of play at the Hornets end and Ruscoe outpaced her counterpart to ensure she was ready to receive and re-distribute the ball.

The final score reflects an evenly-matched game but a deserved victory for Flames.

FLAMES: Hutchin, Morris, Cooper, Adlington, Twigg, Ruscoe, Leeming.
