Silverware won as Mannings Heath golfers wind up season

Mannings Heath golfers wound up another busy summer season with the Tom Anderson Cup, a competition only open to the top 50 in the Agate Trophy merit table.

Winner on the day was five-handicap Tom Smith who carded 11 pars and two birdies for 38 points that put him four points clear of his nearest challengers.

Four players carded 34 points with Steve Pye taking runner-up spot on countback from Simon Hobden, Matt Leary and Luke Hayward in descending order, with Leary's back nine featuring an unusual treble – three pars, three birdies and three blobs.

The result made little impact on the Agate Trophy standings, topped by Steve Wright by an impressive 18 points with Douglas Howell second and Aaron Peacock third. Howell had the consoation of winning the Club Order of Merit, pushing his dad Matthew into second place.

Heath's ladies' concluded their season with their Presentation Lunch, a particularly special occasion this year as it marked the end of Debs Battle's three year stint as ladies' captain. She handed over to Andrea Davies and they teamed up, together with Madeline Robinson, to win the 14-hole Waltz competition that preceded the meal.

Competitors counted their best score on the first hole, two best on the seconbd and all three on the third and continued in 1-2-3 Waltz tempo thereafter. A notional round of nett pars would havev yielded 54 points so the winners could be delighted with their 59 point haul. Runners-up with 54 were Tina Norris, Sybille Shababi and Sarah Moloney.

At the lunch, Battle thanked her colleagues for making her tenure so enjoyable.

Two of the trophies presented were only won by the narrowest of margins. Sybille Shababi and Tina Norris both finished with equal points in the Player of the Year merit race but Shababi 's victory at the Autumn Meeting earned her the title by four wins to three.

And there was an even closer finish in determining the Most Improved Player with Andrea Davies lowering her handicap by just a hundreth of a point more than Debs Battle. The most prestigious trophy, the Lady Captain's Choice award, went to Lynne Jones in recognition of her outstanding work for the section, on and off the course.

The seniors also wound up their season. Their AGM Stableford also included the Winners' Trophy for which only the year's trophy winnners were eligible. A soggy finale saw twenty-eight handicap Alan Houliston make the most of his shots to card seven nett birdies and two nett eagles for an excellent 40 points, just pipping Ray Robertson by a point but leaving Robertson with the consolation of the Winner's' Trophy. AndyJones took third place with 38.

The event also confirmed James Ratcliff as seniors' order of merit champion, his final total of 48 points leaving Ian Spreadbury in second place with 44.

Spreadbury later took the chair at the seniors' AGM where he thanked the section for a very enjoyable and successful year. Twenty-eight competitions had been completed and 29 matches of which 19 had been won.

A fantastic £6225 had been raised for his chosen charity, St Catherine's Hospice, and nearly £1400 had been contributed to other charities. He then handed over to Derek Hendry who has also chosen St Catherine's as his nominated charity. Harry Ford will be his vice-captain.
