Storms force important change to Beachy Head Marathon race day plans

A key change has been made to plans for Saturday’s Beachy Head Marathon because of the poor weather forecast.

The main marathon will now start at 8am in an effort to get everyone finished before the worst of the day’s weather arrives. It had originally been due to start at 8.45am.

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson said “Due to unfavourable weather forecast for later in the day, we have taken the decision to bring forward the start time of tomorrow’s Beachy Head Marathon to 8am.

"This is to maximise the more favourable weather conditions earlier in the day. All other races – 10k, Ultra and Half – will begin at their advertised times.

“Participants may notice some changes to the event, with many of the temporary structures being removed as a precaution, including the race gantry. However, the spirit of the marathon remains unchanged, with hundreds of volunteers, charities and supporters coming together to deliver another fantastic event.

"The Beachy Head Marathon organising team is closely monitoring the situation and has comprehensive adverse weather plans in place, which will be implemented as required, based on the latest forecasts and prevailing conditions.

"All runners will receive a safety briefing on the morning of the event, providing the latest weather information, course updates and key safety messages.

“Participants travelling by public transport are advised to check travel information before setting out, as weather-related disruption is possible.

“The safety and wellbeing of participants, volunteers, spectators and staff remains our highest priority, and all decisions will be made with public safety at the forefront.”
