Rudgwick netballers help net a new world record

There wasn’t so much love as balls in the air on Valetine’s Day as netballers from across the district set a new record for the most players in an exhibition netball match.

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of England Netball, representatives of Rudgwick under-13s, under-14s, under-16s, under-17s and ladies teams played for three hours from 3am to 6am on Sunday, February 14 as part of the 90-hour continuous match in London.

A team of 1,322 players took part in the mammoth match and raised £20,000 for the charity.

Under-14 players Harrie Sands and Pheebs Dartnell, said: “Leaving Rudgwick for London at midnight and then playing in the middle of the night made being part of the world record attempt even more exciting for us.

“We love netball, so what better thing to do on Valentine’s Day”.

Ladies player Emily Kind added: “It’s no exaggeration to say that the junior players, parents, ladies and coaches who were involved spent every minute of their time on court with a smile on their faces.

“We had a brilliant time - we were part of a team of 1,322 who played continuously for 90 hours - we can officially say that we hold a world record and - best of all- we helped to raise over £20,000 for Sport Relief”.

The club currently play in leagues and tournaments across the county.

Lead coach Amanda Mahon said: “Rudgwick Netball Club is a successful and friendly club with players from across Horsham and surrounding areas. We currently have opportunities for girls in school years 4, 5 and 6 to come and try out and see if netball is for them.

“No previous netball skills are necessary, just energy, enthusiasm and an aptitude for running, jumping and catching. Netball is great fun and gives the girls chance to meet new friends and develop team skills.”
