Sussex tennis star Julian Cash given Wimbledon dress code fine

Sussex tennis star Julian Cash has been fined $7,500 (£5,500) for a breach of Wimbledon's strict dress code during this year's Championships.

The Burgess Hill-born doubles specialist appeared on the latest list of player fines published by the All England Club following the tournament. Cash was issued with a $7,500 penalty on July 5, with the offence listed only as 'DC' – which refers to a dress code violation.

A spokesperson for Wimbledon confirmed it was a dress and equipment fine but did not have further information.

In press, Brighton's Cash was asked to explain the reason behind the sanction but chose not to comment.

The All England Club enforces one of the strictest clothing regulations in professional sport, requiring players to wear tennis attire that is almost entirely white from the moment they enter the court surround. Even coloured trim is limited to a maximum width of one centimetre, while shoes, laces, socks, hats and wristbands are also subject to detailed rules.

Players have fallen foul of the regulations over the years for relatively minor infringements, with Roger Federer famously asked to change his orange-soled shoes in 2013, while Venus Williams was required to alter her outfit after pink bra straps became visible during a match.

The All England Club has not publicly disclosed the specific item of clothing or equipment that resulted in Cash's fine.

On the court, Cash and his doubles partner Lloyd Glasspool were unable to continue their defence of the Wimbledon title.

The Brits were beaten in Wednesday's quarter final 6-2 7-6 by Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo.
