Notable Speech was ridden to victory in the week’s biggest race, the £1m Qatar Sussex Stakes, by William Buick as Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby celebrated winning the festival’s most prestigious contest.

But there was much more too, including close finishes and a stewards’ inquiry that overturned one result.
