The nation will be remembering the dead of two World Wars and other conflicts on Remembrance Sunday 8th November. There will be a special morning Eucharist at St Laurence Church at 9.15am when the names of those Catsfield men who gave their lives for their country will be read out and the ceramic poppies will be on display, one for each of them.  Wreaths will be laid by representatives of local groups and the silence will be held.CCG

(CATSFIELD COMMUNITY GARDENERS)

The AGM of the Catsfield Community Gardeners (formerly The Catsfield Horticultural Society) would love to see as many people as possible on Friday 6th November at 7.30pm in Hermon Cottage (adjacent to the Village Hall) for our AGM.  Following a recent Coffee Morning at which many useful suggestions were made, CCG would like to formalise the way forward and prioritise some of those suggestions. The list will be available at the meeting and the committee would welcome your interest and support. Wine and nibbles will be served.

CRAFT FAIR

There will be a Craft Fair held in the Catsfield Village Hall on Saturday 14th November from 10am until 1.30pm. Local makers will be selling high-quality jewellery, hand-knits, textiles, cards, bunting, art and lots more.  Refreshments will be available and there’s free parking and free entry.  The sale is to raise money for the Alzheimers Society so do come along and support us and buy your Christmas gifts.

CHRISTMAS MARKET

The St Laurence Church ever-popular traditional Christmas Market will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 28th November from 10am – 1.30pm. Entrance 50p and children free.  The hall will be full of attractive stalls heaving with gifts, home produce (such as chutneys, jams, cakes etc,) plants, toiletries, tombola, winter warmers and a raffle with prizes of Christmas hampers and other goodies. The kitchen will serve sausage rolls, sandwiches, scones, mince pies and mulled wine plus fresh coffee and teas. Do come along and feel the Christmas spirit, buy gifts and treats or just enjoy the refreshments with friends. We look forward to welcoming you.

CADS PANTO

We are performing Robin Hood on 3rd, 4th and 5th December with a matinee on Saturday, rehearsals are going well. Performances start at 7.30pm and 2.30pm for the matinee, ticket prices are £12 each and for the matinee, children are £6. You can book tickets via [email protected], or calling 07897970981 or from a member of the cast. Come and watch us create mayhem, laughter and a couple of hours of musical fun.

JAN WRITES

Apparently, in days gone by, a man or woman would be employed as a ‘knocker-upper’ armed with a long pole.  Their aim was to tap on the upstairs bedroom windows to wake the slumbering workers, thereby sending them off to their place of employment on time. In the 1960’s when Brian was a postman, a similar action would be carried out by a fellow postman, not armed with a pole but with a handful of small pebbles aimed at the window which had the same desired effect and sent his fellow postie scurrying off to work. A volunteer to perform this task was never hard to find – much to the dismay of the over-sleeper.
