Recently I met the team at Coda Pharmacy, who have opened new premises in Westham, just over the border. Its two founders were born and raised in Eastbourne, and alongside building a successful business they are investing in the town, supporting a range of health organisations and community projects.

I particularly like their regular Walk and Talk: a free walking group, open to all ages, that gets people moving and chatting. If you’ve been meaning to get out more as the evenings draw in, this is a friendly way to start. The next walk is on Thursday 29th October at 6pm, leaving from Bistro Pierre, and you can find out more at www.codapharmacy.co.uk.

I was also pleased to join our local astronomical society’s public meeting last weekend at its new home in Helen Gardens. The volunteers bring everything you need, from telescopes to specialist cameras. The real treat, though, is their knowledge: they’ll tell you exactly what you’re looking at and what’s happening in the night sky above us. The open evenings are completely free, and I’d encourage anyone curious to give it a go. The next one is on 14th November at 5pm.

Finally, I was delighted to attend the tenth anniversary celebration of the DC Collective. Since Edward Ball took over as Director in 2021, he has built strong partnerships and networks while staying true to the organisation’s founding ethos of making art accessible at every level.

Do visit VOLT in Seaside Road to see the latest exhibition, Discover, Celebrate, Grow. Working with local heritage groups and contemporary artists, it brings Eastbourne’s histories to life and celebrates the Devonshire area, a part of town with stories well worth telling.

Three very different organisations, but a common thread: local people investing their time, skills and energy in Eastbourne, and inviting the rest of us to join in. Whether it’s a walk, a look through a telescope or an afternoon in a gallery, I hope you’ll take them up on the offer.
