On the 9th October, over 90 students across year groups at Felpham Community College took part in a world record attempt to get the most people reading in a 12-hour period.

The event was organised through the National Literacy Trust, as part of the National Year of Reading and in partnership with the British Council. It was a global initiative with 85 countries and territories taking part, with the record attempt aiming to connect students, teachers, families and communities around the world.
At Felpham Community College, students from years 8, 9 and 12 took part in both the library and English lessons. Students firstly took part in an online workshop with Nathaneal Lessore, author of Carnegie prize-winning teen comedy ‘The King of Nothing’. Following the workshop, they had the opportunity to either read one of his books, or a book of their choice. The FCC reading logs were then submitted to the National Literacy Trust to combine with all the other entries.
Miss Jarvis, Key Stage 3 English Lead at FCC, commented: “It was so lovely to see so many students engaging with reading for pleasure and working towards this amazing achievement! We know that students who read are more likely to thrive in their final exams and at Felpham we can’t get enough of books! Our wonderful librarian Mrs Woodhead has done a fabulous overhaul of our school library and we can’t wait to get involved with more events and challenges like this!”
