Cleopatra's Amulet is the fifth epic middle-grade historical adventure by bestselling Seaford, East Sussex based author, Lindsay Galvin and will be published this autumn by Chicken House Publishers. Her previous novels for 9 – 12-year-olds have been critically acclaimed, described as full of ‘colourful historical detail’ by the Daily Mail, ‘wonderfully atmospheric’ by The i Paper, ‘gripping’ by The Week Junior magazine and having ‘oodles of charm and adventure’ by the Irish Independent.

With thoroughly researched historical detail, for the first time Lindsay Galvin moves from stories set in recent British history to reimagining Ancient Egypt. CLEOPATRA’S AMULET is an exciting new spin on the life of a twelve-year-old Cleopatra, the Princess of Cats, as we follow her extraordinary but perilous journey to save her father the Pharaoh, all with her much-loved cat by her side.
Like all her stories, she writes to create an enjoyable and relatable read for today’s children. They will be thrilled to experience the crocodile infested Nile, a race up the mysterious Pyramids and uncovering the hidden secrets beneath, mummies, the Egyptian game of Senet and monstrous animal gods.
Lindsay Galvin said: ‘Cleopatra’s Amulet is my most ancient and magical story for children yet. It was inspired by the research I undertook for writing a podcast episode for the adult series ‘Short History of…’ where I interviewed Egyptologist Joyce Tyndesley and was struck by how Cleopatra has been so very misrepresented, mainly known for her relationships with Roman men, rather than her many achievements as the last pharaoh of Egypt. We also know barely anything about Cleopatra’s childhood, which left lots of room for me to give her the kind of adventure that would prepare her for the intelligent and wily pharaoh she will become.’
Lindsay Galvin lives on the Sussex coast in Seaford with her two sons, her one cat and one dog. She was a science teacher in her first life, and is fascinated by psychology, history, and animals - mythical or otherwise. Cleopatra’s Amulet is her sixth novel with Chicken House. She also writes for Barrington Stoke and Collins and loves to visit schools. When Lindsay isn’t writing, researching, travelling, mentoring or reading, she can be found sea swimming regardless of the weather or time of year, sometimes with her dog, never with her cat.
She says, ‘I live on the Sussex coast, and my favourite hobby is year-round swimming with the Seaford Mermaids community. I always seem to get swimming into my books somehow and despite being set in the Egyptian desert, Cleopatra’s Amulet is no exception! After all, Egypt does boast a rather famous river…’
Cleopatra’s Amulet by Lindsay Galvin is out now in paperback (£7.99, Chicken House) and available for sale at all good bookshops, with signed copies available at local bookshops such as The Book Nook, Hove and Bag of Books, Lewes. Lindsay will be visiting schools across the South East Coast this autumn and talking part in Chichester Festival, Isle of Wight Festival and Maidstone LitFest.
