Welcome to this week’s column. I hope those who came out for an extra bit of Halloween magic, enjoyed the Halloween Laser Show, organised by Bognor Regis Town Council last Saturday evening. It was a first for our Events team, and it certainly seemed to be worth the wait, as the Promenade was lit up with a series of spectacular shows, in front of delighted audiences. A big thank you to Showmen Events Group, for producing an entertaining combination of lasers, music and visual effects, perfect for a Halloween evening out and of course to our wonderful Events team.

With Halloween now over and as Bonfire Night approaches, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is reminding everyone to put safety first and enjoy celebrations responsibly. Where possible, attend an organised fireworks display, of which there are plenty in the local area. If you are celebrating at home, only buy fireworks from reputable retailers, follow the instructions carefully, light them at arm’s length and stand well back. As recently shared on the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Facebook page, amazingly, sparklers burn at temperatures higher than a blow torch, so always ensure children are supervised and using them safely. If having a bonfire, keep it well away from buildings, fences and trees, never leave it unattended and keep water nearby. Never use petrol or other flammable liquids to start or accelerate a fire, and do not burn household rubbish or materials that produce harmful fumes. Keep children and pets at a safe distance, be considerate of neighbours and remember that fireworks must not be set off in public places or after midnight on Bonfire Night. In an emergency, move to safety and call 999. A little care and consideration can help everyone enjoy a safe and happy Bonfire Night.
Some of you may have seen the news that there is a new timetable for changes to councils in our area. The government is now expected to decide on the future of councils in West Sussex between now and early 2027, with any new councils due to take over services in April 2029. These proposals would replace the county and district council system, currently used in West Sussex, with a single tier of unitary councils, each responsible for all council services in its area.
Although no final decision has been made on the future council structure for West Sussex, a decision is expected to be based on the proposals that residents and local authorities have already been consulted on, and that have been shared through this column. We’re following developments with interest, just as I’m sure many of you are.
A couple of reminders to finish on, firstly, a final call for any unsubmitted Grant Aid applications. The deadline for submissions, with all relevant accompanying documents, is 5pm next Thursday 12th November, with applications to be emailed to: [email protected]. The aim of the Town Council’s Grants Scheme is to promote a vibrant and active community in Bognor Regis. The scheme recognises and supports the valuable contribution made by the voluntary sector to the well-being of the community, providing financial support for community organisations working for the benefit of residents, with the intention of improving the range of services and activities in the Town. All those applying will be advised of the outcome at the end of January 2027.
Finally, on Sunday, we are marking Remembrance Sunday, with our annual Service. Please do join us to commemorate and remember those who have lost their lives to war. The Parade will be arriving at the War Memorial, outside the Town Hall on Clarence Road, in time for the 10.50am Service. We Will Remember Them.
