Last night, dedicated volunteer Alan Hustwayte was presented with this year's Order of 1066 Award, recognising his exceptional and long-standing service to Hastings.

The award was presented by the Mayor of Hastings, Cllr Paula Warne, at Hastings Town Hall during the annual Hastings Week celebrations.
Over many decades, Alan has devoted countless hours to supporting local organisations and community groups. Best known for his involvement in the Hastings chess community, Alan is recognised today as a FIDE International Chess Organiser and respected community leader.
Alan has played a pivotal role in the Hastings International Chess Congress, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious chess tournaments. The significance of the Congress extends far beyond the chessboard. It attracts visitors from around the world to Hastings, supports local businesses during the quieter winter months, inspires young players, and helps raise Hastings' profile internationally.
He also serves as Director and President of Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club, one of England’s oldest continually running chess clubs, and organises the popular Maureen Charlesworth Chess Challenge during Hastings Week, encouraging people of all ages to engage with the game.
Beyond chess, Alan generously gives his time as Chairman of the Trustees of Dementia Singing Experience Sussex, a charity that provides interactive singing, movement and craft sessions for people living with dementia, bringing joy, connection and support to those who need it most.
His voluntary work extends to a number of other local organisations, including the St Augustine’s Foundation of Excellence, Friends of the Elderly, and Hastings & Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind.
Alan is also Almoner for three Masonic Orders and is an active committee member of the Hastings and Rother Masonic Widows Group, which offers support and companionship to widows. Most recently, he has taken on the role of Chairman.
The Mayor of Hastings, Cllr Paula Warne, said, “Through decades of selfless service, Alan has made a truly remarkable contribution to our town. Through his dedication to chess, his tireless support for countless charitable causes, and his commitment to helping others, he has enriched our community in many ways.
"I am delighted that Alan has been honoured with this year's Order of 1066 Award. It is a fitting recognition of his generosity, dedication and the positive impact he has had on so many people across Hastings.
“There are so many incredible volunteers working tirelessly across our borough. If you know someone deserving of the award, please make sure to nominate them next year, so they too can be recognised for their hard work and dedication."
