Steve Herbert: Let's hope this sorry season is about to come good

It’s taken two months but Crawley Town have finally felt that winning feeling again in the league.

A huge three points were earned at Boundary Park last weekend when a Danilo Orsi goal in the fifty second minute sent the three points back to West Sussex. It was a hard earned victory, and a tough watch, but the boys got the job done. Helped by the fact the Latics were reduced to nine men by halftime after two of their players had received marching orders. A lot of fans then presumed the Reds would go on and win quite comfortably, but that’s not how football works.
Think back to the beginning of August and our home game with Crewe, when we ourselves were reduced to nine men after Gordon and Ebiowei were sent off. It took the opposition a while to break us down, and when they did the goal was a huge slice of luck.
It was a similar story at Oldham but this time it was on the opposite foot. What was impressive was the managerial decision by interim boss Kevin Blackwell to substitute Kai Jennings in the first half after he’d picked up a yellow card. The referee was probably desperate to reduce the arrears. So by taking the player off it stopped the referee from making that happen and with it we kept eleven versus nine and the win was sealed. Clearly the locals weren’t happy and at full time an Oldham fan launched a crutch at the referee! Yes you have read that right, how the supporter made it home is anyone’s guess.
The success puts us to within three points of safety with a huge six pointer coming up at Rotherham on Saturday week. But prior to that our attention turns to the FA Cup and a trip to Dorset to face non league opponents in Wimborne Town. The tie has been moved to a Sunday and live tv, obviously because it reads FA Cup shock all over it. Wimborne Town FC have even built a new terrace on one side of the ground ahead of the game. After trips to Maidenhead United and Borehamwood in recent seasons, this is yet another cracking game to look forward to, and in all honesty we should be doing everything we can to make sure we make it to the second round. That’s where we can all start dreaming of progressing to face the big boys of the Premier League in round three.
What it also gives everyone is a nice distraction from a disastrous start to our League Two campaign.
Although after the win at Oldham let’s hope this sorry season is about to come good. See you all in Dorset on Sunday Reds fans.
