TG Jones says there are no plans to close Lewes store after Uckfield shop shuts

TG Jones has confirmed there are no plans to shut its store in Lewes following the closure of its Uckfield shop.

The TG Jones at 33 High Street, Uckfield, and its attached Post Office shut their doors on Tuesday, September 8.

The closure has led to concern about the future of the Lewes shop and its post office on social media.

Lewes Town Councillor Kevin West said earlier this year that he had written to TG Jones to seek ‘urgent assurances’ about the Lewes store.

A TG Jones spokesperson told this newspaper on Monday, November 2: “There are no plans to close the Lewes store.”

Councillor West welcomed the news, saying: “I’m absolutely delighted that TG Jones has been saved. We’ve seen elsewhere the devastating effect that store closures can have on staff and local communities, so this is fantastic news for the people who work there and for Lewes as a whole.”

He said he and his Liberal Democrat council colleagues want the Post Office counter to stay open and would also like to see a Banking Hub in Lewes.

Councillor West said: “I’m especially relieved that our Post Office will remain in the town. We have been campaigning for a Banking Hub to improve access to banking services, and experience from places such as Axminster shows that Banking Hubs and Post Offices can thrive side by side. Together, they help ensure residents and businesses continue to have access to the vital services they rely on.”
