Oliver Jones has since deleted his tweet, and said: "Shouldn't have tweeted what I said last night, apologies for any offence caused."

But that hasn't stopped him being criticised for referring to the tragedy where 96 people died and hundreds were injured at a football match in 1989.

Last night's game between Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace saw six arrests and 'crowd disorder', according to police, which led some fans unable to get into the match.

In one of many responses to Mr Jones' tweet, Crystal Palace fan Stuart Ions said: "I’m a Palace fan who was stuck outside. Perfectly well behaved I’m seething over last night's situation. That said I’d never ever wish this on Brighton fans or fans of any club to be honest. Absolute scum bag for saying this, letting your fans down #cpfc #bhafc."

The original tweet was flagged up to Sussex Newspapers on one of its Facebook pages this morning.
