This evening, Friday 18th October at 7.30pm the church of St Laurence will ring to the sounds of music and singing for ‘An Evening of Song’ performed by the Rother Community Choir and the St Laurence Church Choir. Talented local girl Lucy Ashton will also be performing and her lovely voice is always a delight to hear. Tickets are available at the Village Store for £6 and include light refreshments.

The good news from the football club is that the first team got their first win on Saturday against Crowhurst at home, 2 - 1 with captain Tony Luke scoring both goals. It was nice to have the traditional cup of tea afterwards in the pavilion. The second team’s match against Sandhurst away was abandoned, more news later. Next week the first team is away to Herstmonceux and the seconds are at home to Hailsham Athletic in another cup tie.

Unfortunately, it rained so hard on Friday that the Gurr family were only able to scarify the cricket wicket leaving the remainder of the work to be done when it dries up. Planting the winter beans has also been halted until the weather improves, but the wheat is already up.

What can one say about the ‘Hot Potato Syncopators’? Their performance was certainly fast, furious and fun. The blurb on their advertising poster was completely accurate – they were truly eccentric! Their comedy was delightful and the clowning was hilarious and utterly ridiculous, the audience was incredulous at their musical ability and in hysterics over some of their zanier antics. Some of these included some very skilful juggling tricks, a very funny and convincing human ventriloquist’s dummy, a Battle of Britain replay- with literally dozens of paper aeroplanes being hurled at the audience and returned in good measure and a large ‘bouncing bomb’, which after much bouncing around the hall, exploded showering hundreds of small pieces of paper in the air – all to the accompaniment of ‘The Dam Busters March’!

The skill of these gentlemen with the ukulele, the eerily beautiful musical saw, the wonderful tunefully thumping tea chest bass, along with dozens of varied percussion instruments, proved that these chaps were talented musicians and singers with a great capacity to entertain. In spite of the fact that no one had been quite sure what to expect from this entertainment, the hall had very few empty seats and those present seemed to have almost permanent smiles on their faces. It seemed that a good time was enjoyed by all!

The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the Catsfield Village Hall on Wednesday 23rd October from 3.45pm – 4.15pm.
