Council WILL challenge Falmer stadium bid

MUCH to the horror of Brighton and Hove Albion supporters, Lewes District Council IS to challenge the Deputy Prime Minister's decision to allow the construction of a new Falmer stadium.

The council, meeting behind closed doors yesterday (Thursday), agreed to launch a legal bid in the High Court for a judicial review of the matter.

In a statement, the council said: 'John Prescott's decision to grant planning permission for a new stadium at Falmer is to be challenged because it conflicts with his own Government's planning guidance designed to protect areas of outstanding natural beauty.

'Before deciding to challenge the decision, the cabinet took independent legal advice from a barrister.

'It also took account of the fact that two independent planning inspectors recommended against the Falmer site.'
