Sussex Police officer accused of biting colleague found not guilty

A Sussex Police officer accused of biting a colleague during staff safety training has been acquitted at court.

PC Christian Field based on the Brighton division, took part in a scenario-based training session with colleagues on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

PC Field, 50, held the role of a subject resisting arrest, while a female colleague was tasked with safely restraining him. During the interaction, PC Field was alleged to have bitten the victim on her forearm, causing bruising, according to Sussex Police.

A spokesperson for the force said: “The incident was reported to the force’s Professional Standards Department, who launched an internal investigation that included statements from a number of witnesses who had taken part in the training.

“Due to the nature of the incident and evidence gathered, a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who authorised a charge of battery. He was placed on restricted duties while the investigation continued.

“Field was found not guilty on Thursday (October 29) following a two-day trial at Reading Magistrates’ Court.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Miles Ockwell, Head of Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department, said: “Anyone who reports an incident to Sussex Police should have confidence we will investigate impartially, proportionately and in line with the law.

“This applies as much to our own officers as it does to any other member of the public.

“Now this criminal process has concluded, PC Field’s behaviour will be scrutinised as part of our own internal misconduct proceedings.”
