Minister's visit to Bexhill

A government minister visited Bexhill on Friday (June 10) to state the case on why Britain should remain in the European Union (EU).

Brandon Lewis, minister for housing and planning and MP for Great Yarmouth, was given a tour at creative training college, DV8 Sussex in Victoria Road, before meeting students there.

He spoke about the importance of EU membership to the future of creative industries with DV8 Sussex’s managing director, Dan Wallman.

Afterwards the minister held a Q&A session with students and musicians, before meeting local activists in the area.

Mr Wallman said: “Brandon visited us to look for some endorsement for the Remain campaign. In my personal opinion, we should stay in the EU for many reasons.

“There is hundreds of millions of pounds of funding from Europe to support the most disadvantaged young people and adults in society and it’s really important to keep that.

“From a society point of view, I think it’s having a cultural and political exchange with Europe is very good for the country.”

DV8 is a training provider for 14- to 19-year-olds with the aim of helping them move on in careers in the creative industries, as well as providing skills in music, media and live events, together with maths and English.

It also offers apprenticeships and traineeships.

Councillor Michael Ensor, chairman of East Sussex County Council, said: “It was a delight to welcome Brandon to Bexhill and we were able to have a positive and thorough discussion on the benefits of Britain’s membership of the EU.”
