Mountfield

You will, we hope, already have Mountfield’s Bonfire Night in your diaries: November 1st, six o’ clock, usual place. We would love to be there but we have two dogs both of whom are gun-, thunder- and firework-shy so we will be at home holding paws. If you have pets, you might find it useful to pick up the free leaflet recently produced by Senlac Vets and available from both Robertsbridge and Battle surgeries. Some of the advice is a matter of common sense but there are also some useful tips which you may not have thought of.

As part of our round, we delivered copies of The Messenger to the church the other day and all the harvest festival decorations were still in place and looked gorgeous. The flower displays were outstanding, creative and warmly themed to the mellowness of harvest-tide. So we congratulated Jackie Spriggs and asked who had been responsible for the flowers, to which she responded: “So glad you liked the flowers — yes, it was a team effort. Barbara Downing rounds up Eileen Spray, Wendy Mayers, Brenda Ray, Mae Johnson and me to do the floral stuff, and at the service folks bring all sorts of comestibles”.

ESCC has announced the first nine exchanges in the county to receive the upgrade to super-fast broadband. Mountfield is served by the Robertsbridge exchange which is one of the first on the schedule, with work due to start later this year with a completion date of 6 to 9 months later. This is better than some villages like Sedlescombe and Brightling (even though it is a suburb of Mountfield) where work isn’t due to start until 2015.

There are a few bits of small print to take into consideration. The first is that not all cabinets will necessarily be upgraded at the same time. We are guessing that this means the central concentration will be upgraded first and they will then move out to the further flung cabinets later. (“Cabinets” are those green boxes beside the road which often have an engineer on a stool checking the cricket scores — there’s one at John’s Cross, another at Bull’s Cross and presumably more elsewhere.)

The second get-out is that there will still be about four percent of addresses which will prove too remote to benefit fully but they will still get at lest 2mbps which currently a lot of people can only dream of.

Like all these things, we shall see what we shall see, but at the back of our minds is the niggling concern about our official super-fast broadband provider. It’s BT!

The full announcement about the broadband is up on the parish website at mountfield.org.uk — which provides the perfect link to a plug for the website. Irene Marchant who, when she is not being Clerk to the parish council is our webmaster (somehow, webmistress sounds misleading) and works very hard to get all the info up there. So you will find an updated resumé of recent planning applications and decisions, items like the broadband roll out, local road closures, rail news and much more. You can even sign up to receive email alerts to new postings which can be useful. Mind you, we are occasionally tempted to commit a few crimes just to liven up the police reports — but you try a shoplifting spree in Mountfield…

The Mountfield Club snooker team, second in the table, travelled to Cramp last week and suffered a 4-1 defeat, with Steve Smith winning the consolation frame on the night for Mountfield. This week, Mountfield hosted Battle C and when Sean Spillet with the help of a 20 break put Mountfield 1-0 up, things were looking more promising but Battle soon turned the game on its head and won the next two frames. Steve Smith won the next frame to level the match at 2-2. Sadly there was to be no great come back with Battle narrowly winning the 5th frame to win the match 3-2. The darts team didn’t fair much better going down 5-2 to Robertsbridge.

This coming Saturday, Ocober 19, is the family quiz night at the Mountfield Club with only £3 entry to include a buffet. All non-members are welcome. And on New Year’s Eve, the Club is laying on a Disco and Buffet to see in the New Year for members and non-members alike. Family tickets will be £17 and £5 for singles or £6 on the night. To book your tickets, please phone Sally Hayler on 07507 506543.

The ridiculous rain last weekend made an even bigger mess of our assets (“potholes” to the more common among us) so the parish council is trying to find out where we currently sit in the Highways hit parade; it must be an improvement on 494th. You’ll be the first to know.

You know where we are: [email protected] or 880614 (evenings).
