Don’t disregard us

I READ the letter from Tony Burton of Greencore (Gazette, March 24) with a sense of disbelief and scepticism.

I see that that the proposed North Littlehampton development seeks to provide “space” that will deliver job opportunities for the next 20 years and beyond. Evidently, prophesy is among Mr Burton’s talents, but research does not appear to be among them!

He may not know that there was space allowed for business when the Parklands estate was built, but there were no takers and as a result the land reverted to housing.

In the present climate, to state categorically that the development will bring forward many times the existing jobs and at a higher pay level presumes that he already has people who have made a commitment to move to the development, but no details are given.

In offering to build a primary school (or is that just provide space) he obviously is not aware of the move by West Sussex County Council, when the Bramley Green estate was built at Angmering, that resulted in the money promised for a new primary school being used elsewhere to make up for the under-funding of another, older school.

This was regardless of the statement by the council to the Angmering Parish Council that the funding was secure for the new school!

I must offer my congratulations to Judith Akhurst for her well-reasoned objections to the plans and drawing attention to the omissions in the Greencore plan. Omissions are normally there for a reason and a deliberate obfuscation of the real intentions.

It is my understanding that we have been told by the government that local people should have more say in planning matters. So come on, Arun District Council, how about a meaningful public consultation with notice taken of the public, and no rubber stamping of grandiose schemes, with no care for the people of the district.
