CCTV introduced at Chichester gas main repair works after contractors report abuse
Gas network operator SGN has said ‘additional security measures’ have been introduced at a Chichester roadworks site after contractors reported ‘verbal abuse, spitting and objects being thrown at them’.
CCTV has been introduced at the Stockbridge Road gas main replacement works after contractors and traffic marshals reportedly experienced repeated incidents of unacceptable behaviour from motorists.
In an update on October 23, SGN said the incidents since work began included ‘verbal abuse, spitting, objects being thrown at workers and drivers attempting to enter the restricted work area’.
The company said all threats were being reported to Sussex Police and warned that such behaviour could delay the project.

The works began on Saturday, October 10, and involve replacing an 86-year-old gas main supplying hundreds of customers in Stockbridge and beyond.
SGN said the replacement was ‘essential’ to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply and help prevent disruptive gas leaks in the future.
A spokesperson for SGN said: “We appreciate the closure is causing disruption and increased traffic on alternative routes. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience being caused and know it is very frustrating for road users.
"Incidents like these can potentially delay the project. To avoid this, and to protect the team, additional security measures are now in place including CCTV.
“All threats are being reported to Sussex Police.
“As a reminder, the road closure is in place for safety reasons, due to the deep excavations required to complete our project.
“Working with West Sussex County Council, we’re continuing to review traffic management arrangements and ask motorists to follow the signed diversion route and allow extra time for journeys.”
A spokesperson for SGN said additional security measures had been introduced to protect workers following the reported incidents.
The spokesperson added: “Incidents like these can potentially delay the project. To avoid this, and to protect the team, additional security measures are now in place including CCTV.
“All threats are being reported to Sussex Police.”
Sussex Police has been approached for comment.
