Fabian Hurzeler spots a key Enzo Maresca change at Manchester City after Pep Guardiola
Carabao Cup fourth round: Manchester City vs Brighton and Hove Albion from the Etihad Stadium - Wednesday, 7.45pm
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler hopes to keep up his proud record against Manchester City - even if they have a new man in charge.
Hurzeler, who joined Brighton in 2024, never lost to City under their previous boss Pep Guardiola and plans to continue that tonight against their current boss manager Enzo Maresca.
Hurzeler feels some connections with the players remain the same but the German has also spotted a few tactical tweaks from Maresca.
“Of course, I think they [Guardiola and Maresca] work together so you see similarities,” said Hurzeler.
“But you also see that Maresca has his own style of football, his own principles but I think you can't change players.
“For example, if you see the connection between Nico O'Reilly and Jeremy Doku on the left side, I think there was a connection that existed also during the time of Guardiola.
“But of course they have their clear formation, they have their clear style of play, they are very successful.
“They press very intense, they press very man-rotated so that's definitely a change and therefore we have to be prepared for that.
“We not only face a good team, we also face really, really good individual players.”
Brighton v Man City x 2
Brighton have the odd situation of playing Manchester City once again in the Premier League on Saturday. Hurzeler is expected to make plenty of changes and manage the energy levels of his squad.
“We experienced it a few years ago against Chelsea when we played twice against Chelsea. So it's about competing tomorrow, then recovery, adjusting, adapting things and competing again.
“And therefore it's really going from game to game. We only focus on tomorrow, we don't focus on Saturday.
“We want to be the best prepared team for tomorrow and that's the main focus so we don't try to be distracted from the weekend game.
“We play a cup game tomorrow, it's a do or die game so therefore it's fully focused on this game.”
