Hastings street left without water following burst water main

Residents in a Hastings street lost their water supply following a water main burst during the weekend.

The fault affected homes in Ghyllside Avenue, which left residents without water for more than a hour late at night.

Martin Smith told the Observer that the street was ‘losing hundreds of litres of fresh water’ because of the leak, as water was spotted flowing down the road.

He added that the leak was reported at around 8.45am on Saturday (August 13) and following this a Southern Water representative later ‘turned up to put a cone where the burst was in the pavement’.

After the leak was repaired, Southern Water said a separate leak was spotted nearby and engineers repaired it on Tuesday (August 16).

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “A burst to a 4in water main in Ghyllside Avenue, Hastings, was reported on Saturday, August 13, which left customers with no supply between approximately 9.20pm and 10.30pm, while an emergency repair was carried out.

"Following this incident, a further leak was detected nearby the next day. Specialist crews were on-site to repair the leak on Tuesday, August 16. No customers lost supply during this second incident.”

On its website Southern Water said it is aiming to halve the number of leaks across its network by 2050 and added that the company has been increasing the size of its leakage team to help respond to leaks quicker.
