Sections of Eastbourne seafront to be closed due to week-long management works

Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) said the works are due to start on Friday, October 7.

A spokesperson from the council added: “This will involve the dredger known as the ‘Sospan Dau’ discharging the new shingle onto the beach about one hour before high tide. We anticipate 10 loads will be delivered between the 7th and the morning of the 13th of October. The works are essential for the long-term protection of homes and businesses along the coast.”

For public safety reasons, the council said it will be temporarily closing sections of the beach and the lower promenade that are in the vicinity of this work.

Sections of the beach where work has been completed will be reopened to the public.

The council spokesperson added: “Thank you for your patience and understanding while this essential work takes place.”

The council explained that the shingle, which acts as a flood defence for the town, is constantly being moved – so lost material has to be replaced or recycled.

A spokesperson said: “It's vital to do this to protect hundreds of homes and businesses. If we don't then Royal Parade and that section of Seaside can be flooded by high tides - which were regularly affected up to the implementation of the new sea defence schemes in the late 1990s."

Work will take place both east and west of the pier, according to Eastbourne Borough Council.
