Storm Austen: Council gives update on Beachy Head Marathon ahead of extreme weather

Eastbourne Borough Council has said the organisers of the Beachy Head Marathon are monitoring conditions and have plans in place as Storm Austen prepares to batter the south coast.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning along the Sussex coast between midnight and 12pm on Friday (October 23), with winds up to 70mph expected.

The Beachy Head marathon, 10k and ultra-marathon races take place on Saturday (October 24), while the half marathon is ran on Sunday (October 25).

More than 3,000 participants are expected to take on the challenging South Downs course over the weekend.

But with Storm Austen brewing, Eastbourne Borough Council has provided an update ahead of the big weekend.

A spokesperson for the council said “With Storm Austen forecast to affect the region this weekend, the Beachy Head Marathon organising team is closely monitoring conditions and has comprehensive adverse weather plans in place.

“These measures will be implemented as required, based on the latest forecasts and prevailing conditions.

“Participants may notice some changes to the event, with certain temporary structures being minimised or removed as a precaution.

“However, the spirit of the marathon remains unchanged, with hundreds of volunteers, charities and supporters coming together to deliver another fantastic event.

“All runners will receive a safety briefing on the morning of the event, providing the latest weather information, course updates and key safety messages.

“Participants travelling by public transport are advised to check travel information before setting out, as weather-related disruption is possible.

“The safety and wellbeing of participants, volunteers, spectators and staff remains our highest priority, and all decisions will be made with public safety at the forefront.”
