Matt O'Riley makes Brighton summer transfer claim ahead of Uefa Conference League clash

Uefa Conference League: Jalbonek v Brighton and Hove Albion - Thursday, 5.45pm

Midfielder Matt O'Riley believes Brighton's summer transfer window has made a huge impact on the squad.

The Seagulls made plenty of changes in the previous window as the likes of Danny Welbeck, Carlos Baleba, Jan Paul van Hecke, Adam Webster, Joel Veltman, James Milner and Solly March all departed.

However, O'Riley - who is set to start for Brighton in their Conference League clash against Czech club Jalbonek - feels new signings Luka Vuskovic, Costinha, Jaouen Hadjam, Michael Svoboda, Andres Chema, Femi Azeez and Zadok Yohanna have boosted the squad.

Brighton’s dynamic

"We are in a really good place," O'Riley said. "We made great signings this summer, and more importantly, they are really good people. The group dynamic is currently great from a personal perspective.

"Having been at successful clubs, I believe that is key to achieving success. We have focused on that, and it translates directly to the pitch."

O’Riley, 25, played and scored in the previous Conference League match against Kauno Zalgiris. The Denmark international has struggled for minutes in the Premier League but looks set to be a key player in Brighton’s latest European adventure.

"It is cool,” said O’Riley. “You have to treat it with respect, because nothing is guaranteed in football. We aren't expected to be doing as well as we are in the Premier League, but we are and we think we can have a good season.

“As a player you just think about the next game and training session. I enjoy living that way because it keeps you present.

“Focusing on the next thing in front of you, rather than getting caught up in what has happened or will happen, brings the most success."

Hurzeler: We have to be 100 per cent

Meanwhile, head coach Fabian Hurzeler refuses to take Jablonec lightly as in-form Brighton continue their European adventure.

Jablonec’s qualifying-round success against Rangers, and narrow defeat to Freiburg in their first group game, have given Hurzeler cause for concern.

“We won’t come here and underestimate anyone,” he said at a delayed press conference on Wednesday night.

“We know we have to play at our highest level. Jablonec won against Rangers and played a really good game last week against Freiburg.

“We watched these kinds of games and we saw that they are a team that try to build from the back. They want to play football and they have good individual quality.”
