‘Extreme and unavoidable urgency’ to find new post office site as Horley centre shuts
Horley is losing its central post office after it was confirmed the branch would shut this year – and there are just two days left to apply to take over the service in a new location.
The closure is being forced following the announcement that supermarket chain Morrison’s was shutting its branch in Consort Way – with the knock-on effect on the post office that operates inside.
The post office’s corporate account manager confirmed the closure date will be on Saturday, October 3 but that it was still investigating all options to reinstate services in the community.
It is currently asking for retailers to incorporate a branch into their existing or proposed business – but the deadline expires in just two days, July 10.

If no alternatives are found residents and businesses nearest option would be in Meath Green Lane, 20 minutes away in the north of the town.
Dorking & Horley MP, Chris Coghlan, said he was working with Horley Town Council and the Post Office to limit the closure’s disruption.
He added: “I have been speaking with the Post Office and plan on meeting with them soon to ensure Horley residents still have a central, accessible location for this crucial service.”
If a successful partner is found, the Post Office has said contracts would be awarded directly as it must act with “extreme and unavoidable urgency to protect essential services relied upon by communities”.
Applicants will be shortlisted with higher scores given to those experienced in operating a Post Office to required retail standards and those with suitable premises.
The current central branch was estimated to bring in between £46,800 and £62,400 a year in fees.
