Retrospective consent for Eastbourne shop’s signage refused
Retrospective advertisement consent for a shop in Little Chelsea has been refused by Eastbourne Borough Council.
The application related to two internally illuminated signs and eight window graphics at the Global Food Centre store in 54-56 South Street.
The international supermarket opened in December 2025.
A Conservation Officer said in consultation that the front and rear elevations, on South Street and Furness Road respectively, ‘generate harm to the visual amenity of the protected streetscape’.

They added that the applicant would have been advised to opt for either a ‘more traditional painted sign or more nuanced HALO lighting’ had they sought advice before undertaking the work.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s delegated officer concluded in their report: “The advertisements, by reason of their excessive extent, illumination, cumulative impact and poor overall design across the double frontage, represent an overly dominant and visually intrusive form of advertising.
“The proposal fails to respect the character of the host building, harms the visual quality of the street scene and fails to preserve the character and appearance of the Town Centre and Seafront Conservation Area.”
