'We all know' - Fabian Hurzeler explains Brighton role for Mats Wieffer after injury update

All the latest team and injury news for Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton's reluctant full back Mats Wieffer prepares to return to the first team after his latest injury set back.

Wieffer, 26, has missed the last nine matches with a knee injury sustained in the 4-3 loss at Chelsea.

The Dutch international will likely feature tonight in the Carabao Cup at Manchester City and will also be a option for Saturday's Premier League clash - also at Manchester City.

Wieffer joined Brighton for £25m as midfielder but has converted to a right back under Fabian Hurzeler.

Ferdi Kadioglu - who will likely miss out tonight with a hip injury - has played well in the right back role during his absence and Brighton also signed Portuguese right back Costinha in the previous window.

Hurzeler accepts that Wieffer wants to play in midfield but competition is quite fierce in that area with Pascal Gross, Yasin Ayari, Malick Yalcouye, Jack Hinshelwood, Chema Andres and Diego Gomez all vying for minutes.

"We have to really see the situation where we are in with the players," said Hurzeler to Sussex World ahead of the double header against Manchester City.

“If Chema is fully fit, I think he played really well in the last games. It is important to get consistency in this position as well.

“When you look at the right-back position, I think Costinha and Ferdi played well before his injury.

“It really depends on which situation we are in with which player, where we need help for filling a gap in our squad.”

What’s best for Wieffer?

“Then it's also trying to understand what is best for Mats Wieffer. Where does he help the team the most?

“I think Mats is a great team player. Of course, we all know that he wants to play a midfielder, but also as a right-back he played some impressive games.

“Also as a right-back, he was nominated for the Dutch national team for the World Cup. I think we all know that Mats can help us in several positions.

“That's so important for us that we have a player who can play in different positions.

“That's also crucial for me as a coach. Let's see how the situation evolves. Then we are just happy that we have a player like Mats Wieffer, who is a fantastic player for us.”
